Oruro Leather Bag
Artisans in Bolivia’s Oruro and Potos communities craft this buttery soft leather bag, combining pieces of traditional woven tapestry. Both towns grew up around local silver mines in the early 1600s, but today the region is known more for its crafts and festivals like the famous Carnaval de Oruro. The tapestries are created on horizontal looms, with the artisans making up the pattern as they go along. Craftspeople in nearby La Paz combine the weaving with supple leather to create a handsome everyday bag. As each tapestry is unique, please expect some varation in color and pattern.
Comments about Oruro Leather Bag:
Visually appealing, the bag pos adidas shoes sesses artistic flair, handmade charm, and a simple elegance combined with practicality. However, the leather doesn’t feel smooth but is sticky to the touch. It has an opaque character, as if it had been spray painted. One side has perfect coverage but the other not quite. For the money it cost, I would rather not keep it, even though it was a gift from a dear friend. Luckily, NG is allowing me to return it for either a ‘store credit’ if I can find something else I like, or an actual credit card refund to the payer.
Comments about Oruro Leather Bag:
The bag is well made overall, though the quality of leather adidas shoes used for the strap and particularly the main exterior of the bag seems a bit suspect (cheap). That leather is thin and looked painted not dyed, as the texture of the leather is invisible I wondered if it really was leather as it was so smooth from the paint/dye covering it. The colour of the main part of the bag is a bit different from the photo (more dark brown), but okay. The tooled leather accent s adidas shoes trip and the woven tapestry were well made and beautiful, and complemented the colour of the main bag nicely. The one interior pocket is zippered which is good and approx. 5″ wide x 4″ high. The thin black lining seems to be a cotton blend, so time will tell if the weave holds with use. I could fit a fair amount into the bag the few times I’ve used it (a big wallet, keys, small umbrella, and book) and it did not look over stuffed. The one snap used to close the bag seems secure, never opening on its own. However, as the main opening is not completely zippered I don’t think I will use it for real travel. It’ll be great for weekends around town, though!
