Organic Makeup Products
Organic. The word sounds good natural, wholesome, pure but it hasn’t meant much on a cosmetic label except a hi adidas predator gher price tag. That hasn’t stopped us from filling our bathroom cabinets and makeup bags with organic makeup and beauty products: Americans spent $170 million on them in 2002, a 19% increase over the previous year, and that trend is continuing, reports the Organic Trade Association.
But now the USDA has infused some reality into our purchases. Since last summer, organic makeup and personal care products and their labels have had to adhere to the same rigorous stand adidas predator ards the agency uses to regulate organic foods. Only beauty products in which more than 95% of the ingredients are organic can sport the same round, green USDA Organic symbol that organic carrots and apples do. (See “Label Lingo,”for specifics.)
Surprise: Most organic potions contain synthetic ingredients or are processed with them. That’s because certain key components such as glycerin, a moisturizer, and xanthan gum, a th adidas predator ickener simply can’t be grown or produced according to the USDA’s organic standards. About 70 synthetic ingredients have been approved for use in products that make organic claims.
included on that list are parabens, which are preservatives, and phthalates, which have many uses. Both classes of compounds are controversial because of preliminary research that raised safety questions. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review, an expert panel established by the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association, noted recently that phthalates don’t appear to be a health concern in the conc adidas predator entrations used in cosmetics. A review of parabens is ongoing, says Wilma Bergfeld, MD, panel chairwoman. The last assessment, done in 1984, concluded that they were safe. However, about 10% of people are sensitive to them. 1next
