Painting found in rubbish sells for
Tre adidas outlet s personajes (Three People), a 1970 work by Rufino Tamayo one of Mexico’s best known artists went under the hammer at Sotheby’s on Tuesday for US$1,049,000.
The painting was stolen from a warehouse in Texas 20 years ago, and disappeared from view until 2003, when New Yorker Elizabeth Gibson spotted it lying on a footpath near her home.
“I went out for a coffee and I saw it on the sidewalk among black plastic garbage bags,” she explained. “I passed m adidas outlet y way and had my coffee, but a voice inside kept telling me to go back and take the painting.
“I stopped reading my book and I went back. [it] had a very bad frame but was in perfect condition”
She took the painting home and put it on her wall, only realising it had been stolen when she discovered it had featured on the Antiques Roa adidas outlet dsho adidas outlet w television program in a segment on missing artworks.
Ms Gibson approached Sotheby’s, which helped return the painting to its original owner, who remains unidentified. Federal FBI detectives are still investigating the case.
