Limiting number of garbage bags proposed for Windsor
Currently about 36.2 per cent of garbage is recycled.
“It’s always important to divert what we can from the landfill,” Maodus said. Reducing garbage sent to the landfill doesn’t save money, he said.
According to the master plan revised in February 2012, it could cost $2.5 million to buy the boxes and implement adidas a kitchen organic waste program. It could cost $4.6 million annually adidas > adidas to collect and process organic waste but the program could divert as much as 15 per cent of garbage from the landfill.
Coun. There would be no point introducing bag limits if there wasn’t a kitchen waste recycling program, he said. There would be no point reducing garbage pickup to twice a month if residents weren’t able to reduce waste another way.
“If you got into organic pickup, that’s where you’d have less of a rotation for regular garbage,” he said. “If you do more recycling then you could probably do a bag limit.”
Halberstadt called Windsor a “backwater” in terms of its participation in recycling programs. He said he doesn’t think area municipalities will adopt more stringent garbage regulations.
“We have this landfill that is going to last to mid century,” he said. The larger receptacles were supposed to help divert two to four per cent of garbage from the landfill, but so far officials have only seen a 0.4 per cent increase.
It’s not clear if all municipalities support expanding recycling options. Coun. Percy Hatfield said enacting a three bag limit would discriminate against large families. Hatfield, like Leamington Mayor John Paterson, was interested in moving garbage pickup to twice a month in the winter but not so much in the summer. Parts of Lakeshore still enjoy twice a week garbage pickup, Lakeshore Coun. Linda McKinlay said.
“As far as garbage pickup, we are light years behind others,” said McKInlay, whose daughter lives in Ottawa and participates in the kitchen waste recycling program. “It’s a way of life (for them.) They have a container on the counter and that’s compost. The recycling, it’s understood.”
She said rural residents are probably more likel adidas y to go along with reduced garbage pickup and recycling kitchen waste than people who live in apartments.
“I use one bag personally,” he said. “That means there are two less going into the landfill. If someone has four, it all balances out in the end.”.
