limit the number of free bags for military personnel
In the wake of this week controversy over baggage fees for military travelers, a number of airlines have increased the number of bags that those passengers can check.
AirTran Airways went a step further, eliminating any bag fees for military people traveling on business. Here the new wording on its website:
make an exception to our checked baggage allowance policy for members of the military who are traveling on active duty orders. As long as each piece of baggage does not exceed 100 pounds in weight and 80 inches in size (length + width + height), baggage will be e adidas xempt from AirTran baggage limit, and will NOT be subject to excess, oversized, or overweight baggage charges. had allowed three bags adidas of up to 100 pounds each up until now.
Southwest Airlines, which bought AirTran on May 2, did not spell out the limits on its website, but a reservations agent told me Wednesday that the carrier put no restrictions on the number of bags for military people. On Friday, that rule is now part of the Southwest website:
Passengers traveling on active duty or permanent change of station orders will be exempt from the two piece Baggage limit and will not be subject to excess, oversize, or overweight Baggage charges, provided that none of the pieces of Baggage exceeds 100 pounds in weight and 80 inches in size (outside length plus height plus width). these changes were kicked off by the incident Tuesday involving Delta Ai adidas r Lines. Some soldiers put up a YouTube video complaining about more than $2,800 fees assessed against their group traveling on a Delta flight from Baltimore and Atlanta.
On Wednesday, Delta raised the free bag allowance for military to four bags, five if they were traveling in first or business class. Other airlines Thursday upped their bag allowances for military, with American Airlines allowing up adidas to five bags and US Airways, United Airlines and Continental Airlines going to four bags.
As of Friday morning, Alaska Airlines still puts a three bag limit on military personnel. JetBlue Airways has a two bag limit, according to its website.
